Ephesus in summer: practical tips for your port day

Is Ephesus very hot in summer?
Yes. July and August on the Aegean coast often go above 35 degrees, and Ephesus is an open site: a marble city in a valley, with little shade and a ground that gives the heat back. Whoever goes in at midday unprepared has a hard time and remembers the heat more than the Library of Celsus.
The good news is that the walk is neither long nor demanding: about 2 kilometres, almost all downhill, around 100 minutes with stops. With three decisions made well, the hour, the shoes and the water, Ephesus in summer is a comfortable visit. This guide goes through them.
The hour matters more than anything
In summer the difference between 8 and 12 in the morning is the difference between enjoying and enduring. That is why our group tours start with Ephesus and not with the minor stops: we gather about 45 minutes after the ship docks, go straight to the site and enter through the upper gate while the light is still good and the squares are emptier. The Temple of Artemis and the outlet are left for the way back.
Privately the advantage is bigger: you leave the ship without waiting for anyone and the guide adapts the pace. And if your programme includes the House of the Virgin Mary, the mountain air is still cool when the heat is already pressing down below.
What to bring
- A cap or hat and sunscreen. Inside the site there are long stretches with no shade.
- Water. One bottle per person from the ship; it empties sooner than you think.
- Shoes with a good sole. The marble of Curetes Street is polished by centuries of footsteps and slippery, especially downhill. Trainers or closed sandals; flip-flops stay in the cabin.
- Light clothes and a scarf. For the House of the Virgin Mary, covered shoulders and knees: it is a place of prayer.
- Sunglasses. Pale marble reflects.
- Ticket money. 40 euros for Ephesus with the Experience Museum included, 15 more if you visit the House of the Virgin; cash or card. The Ephesus ticket office does not accept cash in euros, so we handle it.
What you do not need: an audio guide, a map or an umbrella. The guide narrates and knows every corner.
Where there is shade and rest
The walk has its refuges. Next to the Library of Celsus there is shade and somewhere to sit for a moment, and the guide takes the pauses where the shade is. At the site exit, the Experience Museum is indoors and the best ending to the visit: you see the city rebuilt while you catch your breath.
Every drive is an air-conditioned break. On the group tour, the leather outlet has a seated, air-conditioned hall, coffee and restrooms; exactly half an hour that in August is more welcome than you expect. And the House of the Virgin Mary, higher up and among trees, is the coolest stop of the day.
With children or with limited mobility
A pushchair is not practical in Ephesus: the ground is uneven and there are steps. A baby carrier works better, and the guide knows where to stop in the shade.
With limited mobility, a private tour is the best option: the vehicle goes up to the upper gate, the walk is downhill and the guide adapts each stretch, without a group’s pace. Tell us your situation on WhatsApp and we organise it; we would rather tell you frankly what works.
How we plan the day
All of the above is built into the programme: Ephesus first, when it is cooler; the museum indoors at the end of the visit; air-conditioned vehicles between stops; and a return to the port at least one hour before sailing, with our own shuttle for the essential tour group. Outside summer
The cruise season in Kusadasi runs from March to November, and most of it is not summer. In May, June, September and October the heat is manageable and the same rules apply with less urgency. In March and November mornings can be cool: a light jacket in the bag and everything else the same.
