What is the MSC Splendida call in Kusadasi like?

The MSC Splendida is the MSC ship that calls at Kusadasi most often: 21 calls in 2027 between May and November, almost always from 07:00 to 15:00. Eight hours in port sounds like plenty, but the early sailing shapes the day: whoever sleeps in misses Ephesus.

In practice the usable time is about six hours. We allow 45 minutes from the ship docking until passengers are off and the group has gathered, and you are back in port at least one hour before sailing. Within that margin every one of our tours fits, including the full day with the House of the Virgin Mary. The key is leaving first thing, which is why this guide runs hour by hour.

07:00, the ship docks: what first?

Have breakfast before arrival and get off with the first call. At the end of the gangway you will see the Cruise Plaza, the port building; the Ada Pier Lounge is inside, about two minutes on foot, and we have our own desk there. No need to leave the port or look for anyone in the pier crowd: the day before, we send you the exact location on WhatsApp.

The group gathers in the lounge, we check your ship and your booking and we leave 15 minutes later, around 08:00. Vehicles with 15 and 25 seats and air conditioning, and a licensed guide who narrates in Spanish (English narration subject to availability, confirmed on WhatsApp when you book); if a day has more bookings, two vehicles leave with two guides. This is where you pay the balance of the tour in euros or dollars, cash or card, and we handle your tickets at the Ephesus ticket office so you lose no time.

08:00 to 08:25, from the port to Ephesus

Ephesus is about 20 kilometres away, 25 minutes by road. The guide uses the drive to explain what this city was: a Roman harbour, a provincial capital, one of the largest cities of the ancient Mediterranean. By the time you reach the gate, you know what you are looking at.

08:25 to 10:05, Ephesus through the upper gate

We enter through the upper gate and walk down Curetes Street: the Temple of Hadrian, the latrines, the Library of Celsus, the marble street and the Great Theatre. About 100 minutes inside the site, almost all downhill, with pauses in the shade. At that hour the marble is not yet hot and the squares are emptier than at midday. The ticket costs 40 euros or 46 dollars and includes the Experience Museum.

10:05 to 10:30, the Experience Museum

Right at the site exit, an immersive projection rebuilds the city at its height. It is the best way to end the visit: after walking among columns, you see what the place looked like with its painted façades and its people. Included in the ticket, no second queue.

10:35 to 10:50, the Temple of Artemis

Five minutes by vehicle, one of the Seven Wonders of the ancient world. A single column stands on the temple ground, and that column alone tells the story. A free stop, with time for photos and context.

11:00 to 11:30, the leather outlet, on the clock

Thirty minutes exactly. A short fashion show presents the season’s collection in a seated, air-conditioned hall; then coffee, restrooms and the shop at your own pace. This is the stop that makes the 39 euro price possible: the outlet, part of Türkiye’s official promotion programme, covers part of the tour cost for each visitor. Nobody follows you around the shop and the vehicle leaves after half an hour whether anyone buys or not. We would rather tell you here, before you book.

Around 12:00, back in port

Leaving the outlet, our own shuttle takes the essential tour group straight to the port, 25 minutes with no stops. You are back around 12:05, with almost three hours until sailing. Have lunch on board, wander the bazaar and the seafront, which are steps from the port exit, or simply return to the ship knowing you have seen Ephesus properly.

What if I want the House of the Virgin Mary?

Then you skip the shuttle. The main vehicle continues from the outlet up Mount Bülbül, where tradition places Mary’s last years. By then the ships’ official excursions have come down and the shrine is at its quietest: the chapel, the spring, the wishing wall. Straight down to the port and back around 13:30, an hour and a half before sailing.

It is the full-day tour with the House of the Virgin Mary: same 39 euro price, 15 euros more for the shrine ticket, 5 hours 45 minutes in total. Both groups leave together and split at the end, so you can decide right up to the moment you book.

And privately?

With an eight-hour call, every private tour fits. The essential private tour leaves straight from the ship, with no group gathering, and covers Ephesus, the museum and Artemis in 3.5 to 4 hours with no outlet; you can add the Terrace Houses, which groups do not visit. The private tour with the House of the Virgin Mary reverses the order: up to the shrine first thing, ahead of the coaches, then down to Ephesus. 390 euros or 449 dollars per group of up to 15 people, not per person.

Three tips for the Splendida day

• Get off early. With a 15:00 sailing, every quarter hour of the morning counts. Have breakfast before docking and be at the lounge around 07:45.
• Bring just enough. Shoes with a good sole for the marble, a cap, water and the ticket money (40 euros for Ephesus, 15 more if you visit the House of the Virgin). The Ephesus ticket office does not accept cash in euros; we handle it.
• Check your date. Almost all Splendida calls are 07:00 to 15:00, but not all. The 2027 cruise calendar lists every date with its hours, and on the booking page, once you pick the day, only the tours that make it back in time are shown.
